SUSTAINABILITY

What is a “sustainable development”? The term “sustainable development” was created by the Brundlandt Commission, United Nations World Summit, in 1987, and in 1992, at the UN World Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the 21 principles, known as Agenda 21, were adopted by the world community of over 120 nations: “Sustainable development is the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs”.

The balancing of economy, environment, and communities is the benchmark targeted by Arrowhead Springs Resort. This "sustainable development" initiative engages the following key components: site, air quality, energy, water, solid waste, transportation, telecommunications, buildings and systems, materials, biodiversity, and human communities.

ENERGY

Onsite geothermal energy can be optimized for heating and cooling functions. Solar energy can be optimized to generate electricity and provide supplemental domestic hot water heating. Solar electric panels can provide electricity to NEVs (neighborhood electric vehicles), and for street and landscape lighting. See Section on Energy.

WATER

Comprehensive water management techniques are utilized site wide for drainage control, golf course and landscape watering, irrigation, fire protection, and artistic water features. Geothermal water is used for heating, cooling, hot tubs, and swimming pools. Grey water reuse will be extensive. See Section on Water.

SOLID WASTE

Extensive recycling and waste minimization programs are typical throughout the development. Hotels, retail centers, and residences may share innovative ecologically-engineered technologies.

BUILDINGS AND MATERIALS

Architecture is sensitive to the surroundings using natural materials, textures, and colors that enhance the environment rather than detract. Materials may be selected from resource-efficient suppliers and sustainably-managed foresters. Non-toxic ingredients are specified to avoid health hazards from out-gassing of products such as paints, furnishings, cabinetry, and carpets. Air quality is protected from pesticides, herbicides, inefficient combustion sources, mold, and mildew.

TRANSPORTATION AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS

Transportation arteries provide easy access to all facilities with a focus on pedestrian use whenever possible.   Incentives and convenient access to use electric hybrid vehicles is a high priority at Arrowhead Springs Resort. Hybrid electric rental cars are available from regional airports and accommodated at the resort hotels and residential communities at Arrowhead Springs Resort. Telecommuting technologies, such as fiber-optic wiring, are cutting edge and may be provided in the residences as well as resort hotels. See Energy.

BIODIVERSITY

Visitors and residents of Arrowhead Springs Resort will enjoy an experience rich in biodiversity. Landscaping will feature an array of indigenous plant species. Wildlife habitats and corridors have been identified and protected  and the variety of animal life will roam freely along paths throughout the site. Surrounded on three sides by thousands of acres of USDA Forest Service land, Arrowhead Springs Resort is protected from future development and will remain a community that supports a diverse balance of plants and animals. Of the 1,916 acres at Arrowhead Springs Resort, approximately 1,400 acres, or 70%, of the land is protected as watershed. See Section on Flora and Fauna.

Arrowhead Water & Power will begin by providing water and sewer services and may thereafter provide reliable utility services to all owners and tenants on the Arrowhead Springs property.

SD21, LLC, (Sustainable Development 21st Century) developed the sustainability program at Arrowhead Springs, and with American Development Group, established the innovative development model of a utility and infrastructure company based on sustainability principles. This company, Arrowhead Water & Power, LLC., provides key utility and infrastructure services to the entire community at Arrowhead Springs, including:

Potable Water, Irrigation Water, Wastewater Treatment (primary, secondary, tertiary), Geothermal Hot Water heating, Telecommunication distribution, Photovoltaic solar electric power, Roads, Pathways, Bridges, Parking, Landscaping, Electric cart rentals, site fire suppression, solid waste management, and is a Board member of the Homeowner's Association and Architectural Review Board.
